Trump's security chief quits amid tensions over his border crackdown

Head of US Department of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen has resigned

Head of US Department of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen has resigned

Trump aides had been eyeing a staff shake-up at Homeland Security and had already withdrawn the nomination for another key immigration post but Ms Nielsen's resignation came as a surprise.

CBS News reports that Nielsen's possible resignation is just one of several expected in a "a massive DHS overhaul" created to take the Department of Homeland Security in a "tougher direction", more in line with Trump's campaign rhetoric.

"I said it before, but I really fear for our democracy when the body who creates the laws is telling the body who enforces the law, 'just don't enforce the law, '" Ms. Nielsen had told Fox News last month.

A senior administration official said Trump asked for Nielsen's resignation and she gave it.

But what Trump doesn't tell you about there in those tweets making the announcement about Nielsen is that, if journalists who know the immigration beat are correct on this, he may be trying to position himself even further to the right, where he'd like to do some REALLY bad stuff.

Kirstjen Nielsen, the Department of Homeland Security Secretary unexpectedly resigned Sunday.

Trump announced shortly after that McAleenan would be taking over as the acting DHS secretary.

Regardless, the hits kept coming from critics who saw her sudden speech pattern change as disingenuous. And before AOC fires back about the "GOP" demeaning bartending, that's now what's happening here.

But by October of that year she was back at DHS, this time as secretary.

Nielsen, though, bristled at suggestions the children were being mistreated, or placed into what appeared to be "cages". She ushered DHS through several crises, including a public outcry over a departmental policy of separating minor children from parents declaring asylum at the United States-Mexican border.

Nielsen's relationship with the president had always been said to be hard.

Knowing she was on thin ice Sunday, Nielsen went into the White House meeting thinking she might be fired, the Associated Press reported.

He insists that the arrival of immigrants across the southern US border constitutes a national emergency. As they toured a section of newly rebuilt barriers, Nielsen was at Trump's side, introducing him to local officials.
