United Kingdom parliament likely to consider new Brexit referendum - Hammond

European Union leaders agreed Wednesday to delay Brexit until October 31, 2019, so that the United Kingdom could "find the best possible solution".

Given that Britain's fractious Parliament has rejected her Brexit withdrawal deal with the European Union on three occasions this year, her hopes for a quick resolution could rest in large part on whether her Conservative Party-led government can find common ground with the opposition Labour Party.

Despite trading barbs, both May and Corbyn said they wanted to continue talks.

"What's indispensable is that nothing should compromise the European project in the months to come", he said.
Winning candidates from Britain will only get to serve as long as their country remains in the EU.

May blamed the Brexiters' own failure to vote for her deal for the decision to ask for a delay.

The Brexit Party will be "intolerant of intolerance" Mr Farage said - despite already having lost its first leader Catherine Blaiklock over allegations of racism.

Conservatives hope to avoid such an outcome amid fears the Brexit stalemate will lead to an electoral wipeout that would open the door for what they see as Corbyn's damaging left-wing policies.

And while everyone is focusing on that Halloween deadline, it's really the June date that's the more significant.

UK MEPs state of the parties

British Prime Minister Theresa May was expected to meet with EU Council President Donald Tusk to discuss the offer.

He said: "I am told enough of the referendum doubters are close to folding, partly because the advantages of Labour rebranding as the people's vote vanguard in the forthcoming European parliamentary and council elections would be very significant".

The extension at least provides more time for May to break the logjam, though it could easily just prolong the national agony.

May agreed the delay in the early hours of the morning at an European Union summit in Brussels, ending the risk that Britain would leave the bloc without a deal on Friday but providing little new information on how she will resolve the country's biggest political crisis in more than 70 years. These tensions - which have pervaded the party membership, discussion between MPs and even the cabinet and shadow cabinet - have made achieving political consensus on all sides particularly hard.

Yesterday, Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the the International Monetary Fund, said that the the delay to Brexit had helped avoid a "terrible outcome" that would have snowballed across an already fragile global economy. The Confederation of British Industry said it meant an "imminent economic crisis" had been averted for now.

He also said if voters had wanted economic security, they would have chosen to stay in the European Union in the 2016 referendum; instead they made a political and emotional choice to leave.

He has been critical of the way British Prime Minister Theresa May has handled Brexit negotiations with Brussels.
