Virgil van Dijk has revealed that he voted for Raheem Sterling to be the PFA player of the year despite the Manchester City attacker being his main rival for the award.

"It was the best performance in the Champions League, I think, because it had so many things in it", Van Dijk stated.

"We kept pressing, we kept going, we played very well I think". I just want to vote for who I think has had a fantastic season.

"Virgil is just like a big brother to me". I think he has improved...

Van Dijk, who bookmakers rate as favourite ahead of Sterling for the coveted prize, could not see the point in denying a fellow pro due credit. "We are in a great situation", added Dutch worldwide Van Dijk, who joined the Anfield club for £75m in January last year and is regarded as a strong candidate for the player of the year award himself.

Kane has had a relatively mixed campaign for Tottenham, spending a spell on the sidelines, but he has notched 17 Premier League goals. Nonetheless, the 27-year-old stated he knew Liverpool were the club for him given the atmosphere and infrastructure, and is eager to kick on in pursuit of major silverware. I definitely felt that we could challenge for trophies. "Of course, you're going to be proud, that's something you have to be, but all the hard work in the training ground is something we all did together".

After all, the Dutchman marked the occasion by helping his then-new club to a remarkable 5-0 win over FC Porto at Estadio do Dragao in the Round of 16 a year ago.

Sterling has earned his peers' respect and their votes not only because of his on-pitch exploits but also off it, as an increasingly prominent campaigner against racism in football.

"I wouldn't personally agree with it (leaving the field)".

He told Dutch daily De Telegraaf: "Hopefully it [playing regularly alongside the defender] will happen soon".

"They're trying to get you down".
