Verizon rolls out its 5G service in parts of Minneapolis and Chicago

Verizon Wireless turned on its 5G cell towers in parts of Minneapolis and Chicago on Wednesday. We'll see you May 6-8 in Denver - communications service providers get in free! Last week, AT&T became the first mobile carrier in the states to hit the 1Gbps mark with its 5G mobile service that is offered by invitation to customers in 12 markets. The launch of the network involving South Korea's three top telecom firms will take place this Friday (April 5).

"5G is a new and rapidly evolving technology and Verizon expects regular improvement in 5G Ultra Wideband speed, latency and overall network performance as Verizon engineers, working with a number of technology partners, continue to upgrade the network", Verizon cautioned in a release, essentially hinting that the operator plans to improve the coverage and performance of the network as time goes on.

Verizon also provided a detailed explanation of exactly where its 5G network would be available in both cities. This phone retails for $1,200. Verizon now only offers one 5G-capable device - the Moto Z3 for $480, with the 5G-capable Moto Mod attachment - but has promised to sell additional devices in the future, including the 5G-capable Samsung Galaxy S10.

Today is the day that some Verizon subscribers might have been waiting for, at least those with the Moto Z3 and the 5G Moto Mod.

Moto Z3 retails for $240, or 24 monthly payments of $10.

Samsung will launch the Galaxy S10 5G in the USA during the third quarter.

Verizon had promised to switch on its mobile 5G network in Chicago and Minneapolis next week, but said it chose to switch on the network a week early. The other major carriers, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint, will have the device for sale in the second half of this year.

Per Verizon's site, customers with a compatible phone can access 5G coverage today in these Chicago neighborhoods/areas: The Loop, Magnificent Mile, The Gold Coast, River North, and Old Town. Peak speeds will hit almost 1 Gbps and latency will be less than 30 milliseconds.

In Minneapolis, service is concentrated in the Downtown area, including Downtown West and Downtown East, as well as inside and around U.S. Bank Stadium, the site of this weekend's NCAA men's basketball Final Four. The service is available near landmarks like the Minneapolis Convention Center, the Minneapolis Central Library, the Mill City Museum, Target Center and First Avenue venues, The Commons, areas of Elliot Park and in the Verizon store in The Mall of America.
