Earlier this month, James, 34, told ESPN that he had no plans to shut down for the remainder of the season, even though the Lakers' hopes of a playoff spot were dim.

The Lakers, who were eliminated from playoff contention last week, have six games remaining, beginning Monday when they travel to New Orleans to take on the Pelicans.

This season James averaged 27.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 8.3 assists per game, playing in just over 35 minutes a game. "The medical staff has finally said, "Look, it's just not worth it anymore".

The Lakers finished 28-27 in games James played in during his inaugural campaign in Los Angeles, the first of a four-year, $153.3 million deal signed in the offseason. He had appeared in the last eight NBA Finals. At the time the injury occurred, the Lakers were in the thick of the playoff picture in the West, but as James began to miss games, the team began to slip in the standings. "One of his best attributes is how much he loves to play basketball and compete, so if he can, he'll get out there", Walton said. Caruso was one of the leading scorers for Los Angeles although Rajon Rondo led the team with 24.

He will miss the remaining six games of the year for the organization.

Even coming down the last two holes, I hit a pretty poor chip on 17 after hitting a horrendous 6-iron. On 16th green, I said to myself, "You've got to do something that's tournament-winning".

Former Laker Julius Randle scored 17 to lead New Orleans, which lost for the 10th time in 12 games. Were the Lakers struggling to convince LeBron to stop playing?

Although James' first season with Los Angeles was a failure, it showed promise before injuries changed everything. The Lakers would have to lose out and the Pelicans would have to go 3-4 for the Lakers to have the worst record.

Both teams are dealing with a long list of injuries to key players so this game is more about which team has more depth at this point.

New Orleans will have four games left after the Lakers leave town and it is unclear of Davis, who requested a trade in late January, will play in any of them.

Along with James, the Lakers are finishing the season without three key players in their young core.
