GOP lawmakers on the House Oversight Committee are casting doubt on a White House whistleblower in a Monday morning memorandum, alleging that almost two dozen White House aides were given security clearances despite initially being denied.

Cummings said he will move this week to authorize his first subpoena in the probe which will be for the deposition of Carl Kline, who served as the White House personnel security director and supervised Newbold.

Ms Newbold, who works as an adjudications manager in the White House Personnel Security Office, cited "grave" security risks arising from the intervention of her colleagues.

The identities of approximately 25 officials who were issued security requests or provided with access to national security information are not clear from the documents.

The Oversight Committee chair said that he meant to ask Kline about "the security clearance practices in place when he was at the White House, the treatment of specific security clearance adjudications during his tenure, and his interactions with the whistleblower".

"Newbold, who has worked in the White House Security Office for 19 years", wrote CNN, "was informed Wednesday that she is being suspended for 14 days for failing to implement and follow new procedures and policies put in place by Kline when he was her supervisor".

Read the memo about whistleblower testimony.

According to a transcript released by the committee, Newbold said she had denied security clearances for multiple Trump Administration staffers, only to have those decisions overturned by more senior officials such as Kline.

Among those aides who were granted clearances against the recommendation of those career civil servants were Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, a CNN National Security correspondent reported. Trump has denied he had any involvement in the security clearance process.

A White House whistleblower at the centre of a furore over security clearances granted to Trump administration aides has dismissed claims that Jared Kushner is one of the individuals at the centre of her complaint.

Similarly, after concerns were raised about "senior White House official two", including over the potential of foreign influence, Kline said "do not touch" the case in a conversation with Newbold, according to the memo, and the individual's security clearance was approved.

As part of its investigation, Cummings said the House Oversight Committee would also seek any correspondence about security clearances from Trump's first two White House chiefs of staff, Reince Priebus and John Kelly, and former White House counsel Don McGahn.

Democrats have made repeated requests for documents and interviews but say the White House has been stonewalling.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday. That denial was ultimately upheld, the committee says, and the individual is no longer at the White House. He has since left the White House for the Defence Department.

For example, the whistleblower claims that the White House stopped conducting credit checks on incoming staff. "I know that this will not be perceived in favor of my intentions, which is to bring back the integrity of the office", she is quoted as saying in the letter Cummings sent to White House Counsel Pat Cipollone.

"The Committee has given the White House every possible opportunity to cooperate with this investigation, but you have declined. Your actions are now preventing the Committee from obtaining the information it needs to fulfill its Constitutional responsibilities".

Chairman Cumming's memo adds, "Ms. Newbold noted that she fears additional reprisals and losing her job".
