YouTube stream for hearing on white nationalism flooded with hateful comments

US lawmakers to examine ways to rein in hate crimes, white nationalism

"The hearing today is not about white nationalism or hate-crimes, it's about fear-mongering, power and control", said Owens, expressing skepticism over whether or not hate crimes have risen in America in recent years.

YouTube on Tuesday pulled the plug on a livestream of a House committee hearing about festering white nationalism - after chats on the video quickly filled up with vile racist and anti-Semitic hate speech.

Representative Cedric Richmond, a Democrat, said it was important to prevent social media users from preying on weak people to incite violence.

Joining her to testify will be Eileen Hershenov, senior vice president for policy at the Anti-Defamation League, Eva Paterson, president and founder of the Equal Justice Society, a group that aims to restore constitutional standards, and Neil Potts, public policy director of Facebook, The Hill said.

In March, the chair of the House Homeland Security committee wrote top executives of Facebook, Google, Twitter Inc and Microsoft Corp, urging them to do a better job of removing violent political content following the live-streaming of a New Zealand mass shooting.

The suspected shooter also published a lengthy post online that espoused white supremacist views.

"This just illustrates part of the problem we're dealing with, " Nadler said. Potts and Walden conceded the companies have a duty to try to curb hate.

Archer suspended 5 games; 2-game ban for Puig
Puig will begin to serve his suspension tonight, when the Reds are to host the Miami Marlins at Great American Ball Park. Bell interpreted Archer's suspension as confirmation that the pitch was purposely meant to hurt Dietrich.

"This hearing will examine hate crimes, the impact white nationalist groups have on American communities and the spread of white identity ideology", the committee said in an announcement about the hearing.

"What specific proactive steps is Facebook taking to identify other leaders like Faith Goldy and preemptively remove them from the platform?"

Controversy over white nationalism and hate speech has dogged online platforms such as Facebook and Google's YouTube for years.

Potts reiterated that the company works to identify people with links to hate and violence and banishes them from Facebook, but admitted in this case the company responded to user complaints about Goldy's content.

"The deadly 2017 "Unite the Right" white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, served as a frightening reminder of the current threat white nationalism and hate groups pose to the nation".

Committee chairman Jerrold Nadler was handed a news report that included the hateful comments about the hearing on YouTube, which he read them aloud.

Despite the ban, accounts such as one with the name Aryan Pride were still visible as of late Monday.
