A zookeeper was injured on Saturday morning after being attacked by a Sumatran tiger at the Topeka Zoo. "During the attack, the zookeeper suffered "lacerations and punctures" to the back of the head and neck".

Sanjiv and the zoo's other tigers have been put in holding cells and will not be on display Saturday, Hadfield said.

Authorities say the individual, whose name has not been released, is a trainer at the zoo and is in critical condition.

The zookeeper is the facility's primary tiger keeper, Wiley said, and has been working in that space for years.

The attack was reported around 9:30 a.m.at the Topeka Zoo and the victim was transported to a local hospital. "There is absolutely no consideration to euthanize Sanjiv", Wiley said. The keeper does regularly go into the enclosure to clean up after the tigers. The zoo does not plan on taking any action against the tiger at this time.

Wiley said that an incident like this has never happened at the Topeka Zoo, and that the zoo will reevaluate its safety protocol to ensure that something like this does not occur again.

Sumatran tigers are critically endangered, with fewer than 400 living in the wild, according to the World Wildlife Fund.

The zoo was closed for 45 minutes after the attack and its six tigers, including Sanjiv and his four cubs, were kept in their pen.
