NBC may have pulled the trigger a bit too soon on its Season 17 announcement of "The Voice" coaches: Adam Levine is leaving the show, a network spokesman confirmed for TheWrap.

After 16 seasons as a coach on the singing competition series, the Maroon 5 frontman has made a decision to exit after Season 16, and Gwen Stefani will be taking his place.

News of Adam Levine's The Voice departure was announced by the show's host, Carson Daly, who gave the shocking news on NBC's Today.

Levine had previously been announced as returning for Season 17 of The Voice, along with Shelton, John Legend and Kelly Clarkson.

The 40-year-old Maroon 5 frontman will be replaced in the upcoming fall season by Gwen Stefani, marking her return to the show following four seasons away.

Big names who have been coaches on the show include Shakira, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Usher, CeeLo Green, Pharrell Williams and Miley Cyrus. "I am truly honored to have been a part of something I'll always cherish for the rest of my life", he added. "For me, it was time to move on", Levine wrote.

Theresa May says Labour to blame for Brexit talks collapse
Britain was due to leave the European Union on March 29, but Brexit has been delayed until October 31 amid the political impasse. In the likely absence of parliamentary consensus, Mrs May will table her withdrawal agreement bill in the first week in June.

Shelton tweeted about the news, noting he was having a hard time coming to terms.

"The Voice" Crowns Season 16 Champion - Find Out Who Won! Thank you to everyone who supported this long odd and wonderful left turn into a place I never thought I'd go. Love ya Adam!" Season 15 contestant Reagan Strange, 14, echoed that sentiment by writing, "Thank you for being the best coach eva! And though the show will undoubtedly be very different without one of its two mainstays, nobody is going to miss Levine as much as Blake Shelton.

"First thank you must go to Mark. Thank you all so much", he concluded.

While we can't say for sure if this hard episode played a role in Levine's decision, he certainly made it clear that he was not happy about the dynamic. I only found out about this yesterday and it hasn't set in on me yet. "This iconic squad is returning to The Voice next season", the tweet read.

The Voice already has a replacement for Levine.
