Alabama Public Television refuses to air Arthur episode with gay wedding

"Parents trust that their children can watch APT without their supervision", APT's director of programming Mike McKenzie told, adding "although we strongly encourage parents to watch television with their children and talk about what they have learned afterwards".

Instead of showing the episode on May 13, APT showed a re-run of the television program.

In the long-running PBS series, Mr. Nigel Ratburn has been an elementary school teacher for the animated characters, but his sexual orientation was never mentioned. "In realizing that many parents may not have been aware of the topics of the episode beforehand, we made the decision not to air it".

Alabama so far is the only known state not to air the episode.

Season 22 of "Arthur" kicked off with a special wedding episode that had people across the country talking. "We believe it is important to represent the wide array of adults in the lives of children who look to PBS Kids every day".

Jason Mitchell Dropped From ‘The Chi’ Over "Inappropriate Behavior"
Mitchell has also been dropped by his agent and an upcoming lead role in Netflix's western flick, Desperado . On The Chi , Mitchell plays a young man striving to do better for himself, his girlfriend and his family.

In the Season 22 premiere of the cartoon show Arthur, a gay character, Mr. Ratburn, was to be Wednesday to his partner in the episode "Mr. Ratburn and that Special Someone".

APT's decision was instantly slammed by LGBTQ rights organization GLAAD, with the organization characterizing the choice not to air the landmark episode as, "mean-spirited", and a "losing battle".

"I$3 f leadership of this public broadcasting station cannot serve the interests of the entire public, it's time to find someone who can", she said. In 2005, the state network cut an episode which featured Buster - a bunny who's Arthur's best friend and also in Mr. Ratburn's class - visiting a friend with two mothers co-parenting her. I think we did that with Arthur.

Arthur sometimes deals with material that may be deemed unsuitable to the youngest of viewers, but the show probably won't be angling for an abortion storyline in Season 23 or beyond.
