Deepest-ever sub dive finds plastic bag at 36000 ft deep

Victor Vescovo spent four hours exploring the bottom of the trench

A total of four dives in eight days made it the first submersible to ever visit the bottom of the Challenger Deep a couple of times, capturing videos and conducting efficiency tests in the process. "I think it is a wonderful part of human nature that makes us want to push ourselves to the limits, which has helped propel us as a species to where we are now".

Titanic director James Cameron repeated the feat in 2012. His team said he set a new record for the deepest solo dive in history, venturing to depths of 35,853 feet.

Vescovo's dive was the first out of four dives carried out in the deep-sea pocket, known as Challenger Deep, over three weeks, starting in late April.

"It is nearly indescribable how excited all of us are about achieving what we just did", Mr Vescovo told BBC News.

"Maybe I felt much more like Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard".

The area in the ocean is known as Challenger Deep. "Now in the winter of my life, it was a great honor to be invited on this expedition to a place of my youth".

In an unexpected title that even Vescovo wasn't expecting, he is now also the first man to discover a plastic bag and sweet wrappers at the bottom of the world's deepest trench, according to BBC.

They also discovered brightly coloured rocky outcrops, possibly created by microbes on the seabed, and collected samples of rock from the seafloor.

Victor Vescovo, a retired naval officer and an investor in Texas was inside the submarine, he said that they saw an angular piece of metal and a plastic object that had some writings on it.

During his four-hour trek across the ocean floor, Vescovo relished in his once-in-a-lifetime achievement. Scientist now plan to test the creatures they found for the presence of micro-plastics in their anatomies.

The Five Deeps Expedition is being followed by Atlantic Productions for a five-part Discovery Channel documentary series due to air later this year.

Prior to Cameron's dive, the first-ever expedition to Challenger Deep was made by the U.S. Navy in 1960, reaching a depth of 10,912 meters.

"I think nearly exactly 12 hours, [i.e.] four hours on the bottom, which I think is the longest anyone has ever been on the bottom of the Challenger Deep". This is where Victor Vescovo broke the record for the deepest dive, reaching just shy of seven miles.
