'Game of Thrones' scores record TV audience, leaves fans sad and mad

Well, we've got at least a temporary answer, and while the HBO drama didn't quite end up topping the massive 20 million viewer threshold a lot of people were hoping to see, it is pretty darn impressive nonetheless.

With "Game Of Thrones" over forever, Twitter was lit up Sunday night discussing the final episode. For example, the season included five of the six most-watched episodes in the show's history, and THR goes on to note that DVR and replay viewing helped propel the just-ended season to "an unheard-of" 43 million viewers through May 12 - or, an extra 10 million than watched Season 7 on average.

The finale of "Game of Thrones" drew a staggering 19.3 million viewers in the US Sunday evening, cementing the fantasy epic's status as the most watched television series in HBO history.

She added: "The show brought me depression, anxiety and the worst parts of my life, which includes trolls on a daily bases".

As impressive as the aforementioned viewer figures are, there's another record here that is even more impressive and unlikely to be topped at any point in the near future. That beats the previous record held by the Season 4 premiere of The Sopranos, which won 13.4 million viewers when it aired back in 2002.

The series finale of Game of Thrones also beat one of Thrones' own records, although not a record that has been standing at HBO for almost 20 years. Across all HBO platforms - meaning linear, HBO Go, and HBO Now - "The Iron Throne" was watched by 19.3 million people. This makes it a bigger total audience that the penultimate episode "The Bells", which had a little bit more than 18 million viewers.

Per a Monday afternoon report from The Hollywood Reporter, the sixth and final episode of Season 8 continued the season's trend of posting one ratings record after another for the show.
