Facebook Messenger is getting end-to-end encryption and a desktop app

After a year of data privacy scandals, Cambridge Analytica chief among them, I don't think I'd trust Facebook with my dating interests in general, let alone a super secret list of the acquaintances I secretly long to be closer to.

Alongside its big Messenger announcements today at F8, Facebook showed off its new Facebook desktop and app experiences.

"This is the next chapter for our services", said Zuckerberg, speaking at Facebook's annual F8 conference, where the company gives developers a peek at product releases. "I get that a lot of people aren't sure that we're serious about this". I get that we don't have the strongest reputation on privacy right now, to put it lightly. "But I'm committed to doing this well". But the field is more diverse for messaging, e-commerce and payments, with big players like Amazon.com Inc, Microsoft Corp and eBay Inc as well as fast-growing Silicon Valley unicorns like workplace messaging app Slack and video conferencing service Zoom Video Communications Inc.

Other changes include continuing to increase its focus on disappearing stories, and discouraging users from competing for likes on Instagram.

The agency says more than 100 people have already been tested for HIV, hepatitis B and C. That plasma typically comes from your own blood.

Facebook will also introduce Messenger for Mac and Windows and launch a feature called "Product Catalogue" for WhatsApp Business. The company also aims to integrate Facebook's different online properties, allowing users to send messages between WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger.

For users, it'll mean chats can carry on in one app, regardless of whether you're friends with a person on Facebook, a contact on WhatsApp, or follow each other's photos on Instagram. Facebook said it will roll the feature out globally later this year.

We covered the initial test run of Facebook's first dating features here, and not too much has changed since then (it's basically a dating app but within Facebook). As many as 410 million people video chat on Messenger each month, while the amount of time people spend in video chat on Messenger has grown 40 percent year-over-year. "When people find the right one, it often becomes the most meaningful part of how they use Facebook". The project is codenamed "LightSpeed" and involves rebuilding the popular messaging app on an "entirely new code base". It should take less than two seconds to launch the app. The company is completely rewriting the app's codebase to reduce the app size below 30MB in size and offer extra fast launching of the app, all without reducing the features offered by the app. The ability to watch videos in groups, too, is now in testing and won't be released until later in the year.
