Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday accused West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee of pursuing "cheap politics" over cyclone Fani, claiming that she did not speak to him when he tried to contact her to talk about the calamity.

His comments came in the backdrop of Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal accusing the Prime Minister of not speaking to Mamata Banerjee and instead calling Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi to inquire about the ground situation in the wake of Cyclone Fani. The central ministries and departments (the National Disaster Management Authority, the National Disaster Management Force, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force) responded in equal measure with personnel and relief material, but central support notwithstanding, the state must be credited for the successful and timely mobilisation of resources.

He said more than one crore people in about 14,000 villages of 11 districts were affected. "The people of the State have followed every instruction properly and it's commendable", Modi today said after conducting an aerial survey in Odisha alongside the CM.

A central team will visit the State to make an assessment of the extent of damage borne during the cyclone so that further additional assistance required will also be provided.

The Prime Minister said the authorities were giving priority for restoration of electricity and water supplies and to provide health facilities. "Naveen babu has done good work and now there is need of man, machine and money". "Kuccha" houses were completely destroyed in Puri, parts of Khurda, and other districts. The cyclone forced the evacuation of more than 1.6 million people in Bangladesh. Over 13.41 lakh people had been evacuated ahead of the severe cyclonic storm on May 3.

On Friday, Cyclone Fani made landfall in Odisha's Puri with a wind speed of over 200 Km/hr.

Even though major roads have been cleared of fallen electric poles and uprooted trees, roads to around 800 villages in Puri are yet to be restored.
