Indian shares hit record highs, exit polls keep cheering markets

(MENAFN - Kashmir Observer) NEW DELHI - A day after the exit polls predicted another term for the NDA, contrasting emotions were visible at both ruling and opposition camps with the BJP headquarters abuzz with preparations for results on May 23 and the Congress headquarters wearing a deserted look, devoid of excitement.

The BJP tweeted the images in a bid to strike a chord with his religious supporters as Mr Modi seeks another five years in power. The BJP had notched up its maiden majority by bagging 282 seats. The first exit poll was conducted by the Indian Institute of Public Opinion after the second Lok Sabha general elections that took place in 1957.

"These exit polls have given a high level of comfort for investors and the governmental policies initiated in the first term will only gain momentum", said Amar Singh of Angel Broking.

His hectic campaign which started in March has seen him address three rallies a day on average, criss-crossing the length and breadth of the geographically diverse nation which is officially secular and home to a sizeable Muslim minority.

The opposition parties have once again raked up the issue of EVM tampering after exit polls gave a clear verdict in favour of the BJP.

Modi's government has fallen short on creating jobs for the million Indians entering the labour market every month, while the shock introduction of a sudden ban on high-denomination cash in 2016 disrupted business and Indian banks are struggling with huge bad debts.

"I expect another 2-3% rally in the market in the next 3-4 days based on the cue", said Samrat Dasgupta, a fund manager at Esquire Capital Investment Advisors.

Primary Waves will acquire a 50 percent stake of Houston's estate, valued at $14 million. Pat added: "The hologram has taken precedence over everything".

But the political observers have been right in cautioning the market to temper the euphoria that the exit polls have triggered.

Modi ordered air strikes on a suspected militant camp in Pakistan, which led to a surge in tension between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

Although, it should be pointed out, that exit polls are often known to get it wrong.

But many Indians applauded Modi's tough stand and he was able to attack the opposition for being soft on security.

In 2014, they won all 25 seats even though they lost to Congress in 2018 when it came time for the State Assembly Elections.

Working on the premise that the BJP voter is more vocal and therefore open about his preference, Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha said: "The silent voter will be king on May 23rd 2019". "Everyone has seen the tremendous support for PM Modi and the BJP in Bengal".
