The statement comes after NBC News, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported on 21 May that Washington has given Ankara a deadline - the end of the first week of June - to either abandon the S-400 deal with Russian Federation or face penalties.

"Nothing of that kind [has occurred] at the official level", Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Yavuz Selim Kiran said, "In March the U.S. renewed its previous proposal on supplies of Patriot missile systems".

"We are sure that this [working group] will dispel America's concerns and render discussions on the S-400 system will jeopardize F-35's presence pointless", Kıran said.

Turkey's defence minister has said the country is preparing for potential U.S. sanctions over its purchase of Russian S-400 missile defence systems.

As a NATO-state, Turkey has been facing mounting pressure from the U.S. and its allies over the S-400 deal.

According to the CNBC, if Turkey did not abide by these orders, it would face removal from F-35 programme, forfeiture of 100 promised F-35 jets, the imposition of USA sanctions and potential blowback from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

At the meeting with representatives of Turkish mass media in the USA capital, the deputy foreign minister noted that Ankara opposed the U.S. sanctions under the "Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act" because the deal with Moscow on the S-400 had been signed before the law was passed.

Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said Turkey was fulfilling its responsibilities in the F-35 project and expected the programme to continue as planned. It is created to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, including medium-range missiles, and can also be used against ground installations.
