UK's Corbyn: Labour will continue to oppose May's Brexit deal

The cross-party talks between May's Conservative Party lawmakers and socialist firebrand Jeremy Corbyn's Labour always seemed a long shot, but May resorted to opening the talks after Parliament overwhelmingly rejected the agreement she thrashed out previous year with European leaders on three separate occasions.

But after the "disastrous" leadership election in 2016, when Theresa May was crowned as the victor before members had any say, activists want the rules changed so that their preferred candidate must be taken into account.

The ending of negotiations set off a predictable blame game Friday.

Johnson was widely expected to run for the Conservative leadership in the aftermath of the Brexit vote in 2016, but his campaign collapsed before he announced he was standing when an ally withdrew support amid claims he could not unite the party. He added, "Even more crucially, the increasing weakness and instability of (May's) government means there can not be confidence in securing whatever might be agreed" between the Tory and Labor parties.

"And, in particular, we haven't been able to overcome the fact that there isn't a common position in Labour about whether they want to deliver Brexit or hold a second referendum which could reverse it".

But with few in the United Kingdom or in Europe keen for Britain to live with no deal in place, in what would likely wreak economic havoc on both sides of the English Channel, she added that British indecisiveness could see the process strung out even further.

The poll for The Times found that he is viewed as the leader most likely to triumph in a general election, with 70 per cent believing he would be victorious.

Importantly, however, was the issue surrounding a customs union.

But the Brexit Party leader laughed at the suggestion and questioned whether he could trust the leadership favourite.

"It looks increasingly likely she will be replaced by a pro-Brexit PM with no election, and that automatically increases the chances of a no-deal Brexit".

Pro-Brexit Conservatives are furious that Britain has not yet left the European Union, nearly three years after voters backed Brexit in a referendum. May now has to gird herself for results that could prove disastrous.

Without the full support of her own party and the DUP, May was relying on assistance from the opposition.

He added there was no deal on how parliament should move forward.

Pressure on May and Corbyn to reach a deal increased this month after local elections that were bad for both parties. The Conservatives were on 9%, down 1 point.

Though Corbyn, a lifelong Euroskeptic, argued that a deal needed to be reached, his party's divisions have made that outcome hard.

Allies of Mrs May pointed the finger at shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer, a key player in the negotiations, who has suggested that a deal would be unlikely to get through the Commons without a referendum attached.

Labour supporters of a people's vote called on Mr Corbyn to declare that he has reached the end of the road in pursuing the options set out in last autumn's conference motion and will throw the party's weight fully behind a Final Say referendum.

One possible hope for Mrs May would be if Labour ordered its MPs to abstain rather than vote against it.

The Brexit impasse is unlikely to be broken swiftly.
