Baseball star David Ortiz flown to Boston for treatment after being shot in Dominican Republic

Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz is reportedly expected to make a "total recovery" after suffering a gunshot wound while at a club in the Dominican Republic.

Ortiz, who starred for the Boston Red Sox for 14 seasons before retiring in 2016, underwent surgery at the Abel Gonzalez clinic. "We ask for privacy as David works toward recovery".

In the Dominican Republic, a person arrested has some protections, including a defense and a fair and public trial, the State Department said. Lopez said the number of visitors will be restricted. The country's attorney general told Ortiz on Monday that the investigation had "advanced considerably", according to Martin Finucane of the Boston Globe, who cited a Spanish report.

In the meantime, Ortiz is in intensive care in a Santo Domingo hospital following several hours of surgery last night.

Lopez said early Monday that doctors had removed Ortiz's gallbladder, part of his intestines and his colon.

Dominican Police identified the shooter as Eddy Feliz Garcia, 25, who witnesses claim climbed off a motorcycle and shot Ortiz from a short distance.

Brexit: Labour launches cross-party motion to block no deal
Esther McVey has also backed a no-deal Brexit, suggesting that she is prepared to suspend Parliament to make it happen. Keir Starmer , Labour's Shadow Brexit Secretary, said: "This is a disappointing, narrow defeat".

Here are the details of the second suspect being arrested. Authorities are investigating on whether Ortiz was the intended target. Ortiz's father, Leo, told local media he had no idea why someone would have shot at his son.

Francona recalled a season when Ortiz was dealing with a wrist injury, which led to a reduction in playing time.

"This is our [expletive] city and nobody is going to dictate our freedom", Ortiz said before the Red Sox faced the Kansas City Royals in Boston.

Ortiz underwent a first round of surgery in Santo Domingo on Sunday night before being flown to Boston. He maintains a home in Weston, on the outskirts of Boston.

Throughout the night and today, ESPN and ESPN Deportes reporters Enrique Rojas and Marly Rivera have been documenting the story, providing updates on SportsCenter and other ESPN news and information platforms - including ESPN.com and ESPNDeportes.com - and transcribing Spanish-language news reports for fans on Twitter.
