Spanish police find cocaine aboard Brazilian presidential plane headed for G20 summit

Mr Bolsonaro confirmed the arrest in a statement on Tuesday night.

Bags filled with cocaine were discovered on a military plane travelling with the president of Brazil to the G20 summit on Tuesday, allegedly planted there by a Brazilian air force member. "We will not tolerate [this] disrespect to our country!" he wrote.

The Brazilian Defense Ministry says it has opened an investigation by the military police.

With the G20 summit beginning in Osaka this Friday, the expectation was that Jair Bolsonaro's meetings with China's general secretary Xi Jinping would take center stage in the Brazilian news cycle.

During a security check when the Brazilian air force plane stopped over in Seville, the airman was found to have 39 kilograms of cocaine in 37 bags inside a small suitcase.

In a tweet, Bolsonaro said he had been informed of Tuesday's arrest by the defense minister and ordered "immediate cooperation with Spanish police", and described the officer's conduct "disgraceful".

'Obviously, given the quantity of the drug he was carrying, he didn't buy it on the corner and bring it, right?' said Mourao.

Vice President Hamilton Mourao called the suspect a "mule" after officers determined there was approximately 86 pounds of the drug hidden in three pieces of luggage.

He said if the officer is found guilty, he would "be judged and convicted by law".

'He was working as a mule.

At the time, President Jair Bolsonaro was aboard a separate plane, reportedly travelling ahead of the one in question.
