Angelique Kerber impresses in win over Simona Halep — WTA Eastbourne

A high-quality quarter-final tie at the Nature Valley International went Kerber's way as the German won 6-4 6-3 in a battle of the former world number ones.

Kerber, the fourth seed, said: "I'm really happy with how I played". "To play against Simona, you know you have to play the best tennis".

This was certainly the pick of the quarterfinals on paper, with Kerber and Halep both slam champions and former world number ones, and they certainly delivered, with both displaying some high quality match in nearly ideal conditions in Eastbourne.

Kerber will face unseeded Ons Jabeur in the final four, after the Tunisian - who eliminated Britain's Johanna Konta earlier in the week - secured a comeback victory over Alize Cornet 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.

'It wasn't easy at the end, I was scared for my ankle, but hopefully everything will be good. "I tried to move better, be better on court, and that helped me regain my shots".

The reason she and others joined the military was "to go after Al Qaeda, not the Taliban", she explained. I mean, the guy's a war criminal and she's going over to meet with him. "I would do that".

Germany's world number five Kerber, twice a runner-up at Eastbourne, won 6-4 6-3 in one hour and 13 minutes.

Pliskova, who won in Eastbourne two years ago, dropped just two games outclassing Russian Federation s Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-2, 6-0.

World No.10 Aryna Sabalenka faces Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands in another quarterfinal while former World No.1 Karolina Pliskova meets Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova.

"I'm improving with every match here", Pliskova, who is yet to drop a set in the tournament, said.

Halep certainly played well and will be encouraged going into Wimbledon next week, though could not match Kerber today.
