Barty suffered no such shocks as she saw off a bright start from Croatia's Donna Vekic in her first match since lifting a first Grand Slam title to win 6-3, 6-4.

Barty, the second seed in Birmingham, is unlikely to chase down Naomi Osaka for the world No.1 ranking this week.

Konta will be seeking to bounce back quickly going into Wimbledon.

The 23-year-old won her breakthrough major on the dirt just weeks before moving to her favourite surface.

"I don't feel any different myself", she added.

"I feel extremely comfortable on it".

"But certainly knowing that there is not pressure for me and no real worries and stresses about the transition makes it a lot easier".

There was also " credible evidence pointing to the crime scenes (in Turkey) having been thoroughly, even forensically, cleaned". Trials in Saudi Arabia can be shrouded in secrecy, she noted, insisting that Khashoggi case should be open to public scrutiny.

A former French Open victor herself, Ostapenko has struggled with injuries this season but has now posted back-to-back wins for just the second time this year.

However, Barty insists she is not yet feeling any strain of being a Grand Slam champion.

"It's a nice burden to chuck on me", she said.

"For me nothing changes".

"But I'm still the same person".

"I understand if I play well, I can win many matches, and it was just the matter of the time". I'm still the same Ash Barty and I try and prepare the same way.

Barty will now face American world No.66 Jennifer Brady in the second round on Thursday.
