Bookies Unibet are now pricing England at 11/4 (+275) to win the Cricket World Cup, having previously put them in as 21/10 (+210) second favourites behind India to claim the trophy.

Test skipper Joe Root was plumb lbw to an inswinger for eight before England captain Eoin Morgan (four) fell into a hooking trap when a top-edge was held safely by Pat Cummins at fine leg.

Nevertheless, a defiant Stokes said: "That's what's made us so successful in the last four years".

When Pietersen's comments were read back by the reporters to Morgan following England's defeat to Australia, he said: "Really?"

And the Australians ensured that they maintained their side of history as they beat England by 64 runs on Tuesday.

Ben Stokes, just as he did against Sri Lanka, showed that what could be done with some more judicious decision-making as he grafted intelligently before falling for 89.

Cricket analysts CricViz calculated that Australia played 32% false shots in the first ten overs and yet they managed to avoid losing a wicket; the last time any team played that many shots in the first 10 without losing a wicket was January 2017.

Australia's Jason Behrendorff celebrates taking his fifth wicket of the innings (Adam Davy/PA). "How is he going to suddenly turn it on against India in a game when if they lose they could be out (of) the World Cup when he has no form behind him?"

To make things worse, even Ben Stokes, who has now played two outstanding knocks in defeat, sustained tight calves while batting and the physio had to attend him multiple times.

"For a long time we never won anything against Australia, but we have had some success recently and I think we have a good side. We're a very, very confident team, these last two games aren't going to change that".

While they started off with a brilliant 104-run win over South Africa in the tournament opener, they were handed a blow by Pakistan in their very next game.

"I'm not too disappointed batting", says Aaron Finch.

'We're still searching to try and play a ideal game but we're slowly getting better and better each time and today was another really good result for us, ' he said.

Stokes, struggling to run and requiring on-field treatment, launched Glenn Maxwell for two sixes and England had the faintest sniff of an unlikely win until Starc returned to the attack and bowled Stokes with a fierce yorker. We pegged it back really well. "Every game is crucial and we can't take any lightly", says Finch, while referring to how the crowd might react. Not anymore. Their campaign is in shambles at the moment after losses to Sri Lanka and Australia.
