BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Unleashed With 523 Horsepower

All three share the same core body style.

The 8-Series Gran Coupe is essentially a 4-door version of the current 8-Series coupe and appears to be the better proportioned option thanks to its long, fastback roof.

Compared to the Coupe, the Gran Coupe is 9.0 inches (228.6 mm) longer, 1.2 inches (30.5 mm) wider and 2.2 inches (55.9 mm) taller.

Photos of the 8-series Gran Coupe reveal a cabin appropriately luxurious to its asking price. Some of the detailing is particularly notable, like the flying buttress design that demands the metalworks' finishing to be done by hand. That will lower weight and the car's center of gravity. As a result, the vehicle has a wide grille that is flanked by adaptive LED headlights with laserlights.

The engine choices for the 8 Series Gran Coupé mirror those of its siblings.

A 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 will likely be added as an entry-level option at some point, while an uprated version of the M850i's V-8 with over 600 horsepower has been developed for the range-topping M8 grade. It can be had in rear- or four-wheel drive and the 0-62mph times are 5.2sec and 4.9sec respectively. This allows the model to run from 0-62 miles per hour (0-100 km/h) in 5.1 seconds and onto a limited top speed of 155 miles per hour (250 km/h). BMW pairs it with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, with swifter gearshifts and steering wheel paddles as standard.

The company has now ordered 387 Airbus aircraft since 2010, but it's the first time it has placed an order for the A220. At the start of the show, Boeing's head of commercial aircraft Kevin McAllister apologised for the crashes.

Double-wishbone suspension is used at the front, and five-link rear suspension. Rear-wheel-drive 840i models will start at $85,895.

Stepping up to the M850i xDrive brings a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque (the same as the Coupe and Convertible). With a sizable bump in power, the M850 takes just 3.7 seconds to hit 60 miles per hour (just one-tenth of a second slower than the Coupe). It is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission which can be paired to an optional all-wheel drive system. The M850i gets 20-inch V-spoke cerium grey wheels with 245/35R20 and 275/30R20 performance run-flat tires as standard.

Rivals for the 8-Series Gran Coupe include the Audi A7 Sportback, Maserati Ghibli, Mercedes-Benz CLS, Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, and Porsche Panamera. The longer, taller exterior means more space for passengers inside, where there is 3.4 inches more rear headroom and 7.1 inches more rear legroom than in the standard 8-series. The load length can be extended when the 40/20/40-configured rear seat is folded down. All 8 Series Gran Coupe models get a 12.3-inch screen for a gauge cluster, along with a 10.25-inch infotainment screen.

A 464 watt, 16-speaker Harman-Kardon surround sound audio system and wireless phone charging is standard, while a 1,400 watt, 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System is optional.

The 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe enters production in July, and it will go on sale in September. A glass moonroof is standard, but M850i xDrive variants can opt for a carbon fiber roof instead.
