The go-faster division of Bayerische Motoren Werke is now analyzing the prospects of coming out with a standalone vehicle that doesn't have a predecessor nor is it based on an existing BMW product.

A standalone model would allow BMW M to compete against Mercedes-AMG's models such as the two- and four-door GT models.

"We are investigating M variants that may also be standalone, that don't have a predecessor", revealed BMW M boss Markus Flasch in an interview with Australian website CarSales.

BMW's M performance division is changing its mind about not building a standalone model, and is now instead studying how to build one.

However, despite gleaning this information about the responsible authorities, the precise perpetrators remained a mystery. If Russian suspects are charged in the Netherlands, it remains to be seen whether they would ever appear for trial.

BMW M plans to unveil a concept later this month to provide a hint of its future plans. As BMW has stripped it of its exclusivity by branding almost every model with an M badge, it's lost its luster, pedigree, and you can see the decline in the brand's models. The concept is expected to feature electrification and possibly some form of self-driving technology that could be used to help hone a driver's skill. The outlet said another source mentioned that with the studies being in "a very early phase", multiple body styles as well as powertrains are still on the table.

The new M auto is still very much in the early stages of study, but the company could have the vehicle approved before M's 50th anniversary in 2022.

BMW M has launched a standalone auto in the past: the M1 supercar of the late 1970s.
