The 737 Max has been grounded since March following the two fatal crashes.

Pilot Dennis Tajer, a spokesman for the union that represents American Airlines pilot, the Allied Pilots Association, said it's good Muilenburg was willing to revisit the cockpit alert problem and to acknowledge Boeing mishandled conveying information.

Airbus struck a $6 billion plane deal with Cebu Pacific on Tuesday, extending its lead on orders at a subdued Paris Airshow as rival Boeing struggles following the grounding of its top-selling jet.

While the company is still far from ready to churn out battery-operated jumbo jets, Scherer said Airbus already has "the technology for autonomous flying" and for planes flown by just one pilot.

According to Airbus, due to its extended range, the new jet will allow airlines to operate a lower-cost single-aisle aircraft on longer and less heavily travelled routes - many of which can only be served by larger and less efficient wide-body aircraft.

Five months earlier, 189 people were killed when a Boeing 737 Max operated by Lion Air crashed.

Boeing climbed 3.5 percent to $367.21 at 11:28 a.m.in NY, extending gains after announcing the Max deal. "It is a pivotal moment for all of us", he said. Airbus executives said the Max crashes aren't affecting their sales strategy, but are a reminder of the importance to the whole industry of ensuring safety.

Boeing has said it had no plans to change the name of the 737 MAX after a news report that it would be prepared to do so to improve its future marketing after two deadly crashes.

The 737 MAX 8 is now grounded worldwide after Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed in March, killing all 157 people on board and drawing scrutiny to the new Boeing model's anti-stall system. But Air Lease founder Steven Udvar-Hazy, a doyen of the leasing industry, said the NMA project remained "a little bit in cold storage" as long as the MAX grounding lasted.

At the start of the show, Boeing's head of commercial aircraft Kevin McAllister apologised for the crashes.

Carey said "to make the claim that these accidents would not happen to USA -trained pilots is presumptuous and not supported by fact".

When it comes to autonomous passenger jets, safety is an obvious concern.

The company has now ordered 387 Airbus aircraft since 2010, but it's the first time it has placed an order for the A220.

Analysts say almost 40,000 planes will be in service by 2038, double the industry's current fleet.
