Police officer in Sacramento wounded badly in shooting

There are no words to convey the depth of the sadness we feel, or how heartbroken we are for the family of our young, fearless officer.

Accompanied by a training officer, O'Sullivan was helping to pick up the woman's belongings in her yard at around 6:10 p.m. when the gunman opened fire from the residence on the 200 block of Redwood Avenue in north Sacramento.

As officers swarmed the area, the gunman continued firing and the standoff lasted about eight hours before he surrendered.

Prior to working for the Sacramento Police Department, she was a former police explorer serving both the Martinez and Pleasant Hill Police Departments.

Sacramento police spokesman Sgt. Vance Chandler tells the Chronicle that officers at the scene had to create "very, very big perimeter" due to the long range of rifle fire.

"If he goes to prison for the rest of his life, I could care less", Orlando Ramos said.

Acting Sacramento Police Chief Dave Paletta said officer Tara O'Sullivan, 26, died in the hospital following surgery. "And being able to conquer that and being able to move past that and push past that, that's probably one of the most important things we can do as police officers".

Police identified the suspected shooter as 45-year-old Adel Sambrano Ramos, booked Thursday morning on charges related to O'Sullivan's killing.

Orlando Ramos, a younger brother of the suspect, said Adel Ramos had been estranged from his family. Ilyas said Ramos threatened three children with kitchen knives while they played outside and frequently shouted racial slurs at the family.

Melissa Repa, director of the career center, recalled watching O'Sullivan go through an obstacle and ropes course in the rain during her first day in the university training program. She was expected to be on her own in a couple of weeks, Peletta said.

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg offered his condolences to O'Sullivan's family at the conference after the arrest.

He said the school community was planning on raising money for a scholarship in her honor.

The officer could not be evacuated until an armored vehicle arrived at the scene shortly before 7 p.m.

"Our officers maintained cover in safe positions until we were able to get an armored vehicle in the area", he said.

O'Sullivan died at the UC Davis Medical Center. The other woman wasn't hurt and the relationship between her and the gunman wasn't immediately known.

"I don't think there's a person on this earth who would say she wasn't a flawless police officer", Hahn said.

O'Sullivan grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and graduated previous year from Sacramento State University with a degree in child development. O'Sullivan, who just graduated from the police academy in December, was the first police officer killed in the line of duty in Sacramento in 20 years.
