Sudan protesters happy with boycott junta warns of criminal tactics

The streets of the Sudanese capital Khartoum are eerily quiet and deserted as a general strike called by defiant opposition protesters on Sunday to force the military to hand over power to a civilian authority entered its second day on Monday.

The generals took power after ousting longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir on April 11 after months-long protests against his iron-fisted, three-decade rule.

However, he said that the TMC is adamant that the head of the new council should be from the military.

A digital rights group, Netblocks says the "near-total blackout of internet coverage" in Sudan continues.

Talks broke down after dozens of protesters were killed in a crackdown on a sit-in on 3 June.

The strike's launch on Sunday came almost a week after dozens were killed in an assault by security forces on demonstrators holding a sit-in outside the army headquarters in Khartoum to demand civilian rule. Mobile internet connectivity has been largely offline since June 3, the group said.

Most parts of the capital remained closed as shopkeepers, traders and employees opted to remain indoors, an AFP correspondent reported.

He said security forces would provide "security to isolated civilians, reopen roads and facilitate the mobility of people, public and private transport and protect markets and strategic state installations".

He will also visit neighboring Ethiopia to discuss options for a political solution to the Sudan crisis with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

"The Alliance for Freedom and Change (umbrella protest movement) is fully responsible for recent unfortunate incidents. including blocking roads which is violating global humanitarian laws", Lieutenant General Jamaleddine Omar said on state television late Sunday.

The Forces for Declaration of Freedom and Change, which represents the protesters, said Tuesday they chose to suspend their general strike and campaign for civil disobedience until further notice. "I have not been released; I have been deported from my country", Yasir Arman, deputy chief of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), told an AFP reporter at a hotel in South Sudan's capital Juba.

Tibor Nagy, the assistant secretary for African affairs, "will call for a cessation of attacks against civilians and urge parties to work toward creating an enabling environment. for talks to resume", the department said in a statement.

The military today also deported three members of a rebel movement detained last week in the wake of the deadly raid on the sit-in, the movement said on Monday.

Protest leaders in Sudan have agreed to suspend widespread strikes and return to the negotiating table, an Ethiopian mediator says.
