Caps Sign Carl Hagelin to a Four-Year, $11 Million Extension

The Washington Capitals have re-signed forward Carl Hagelin to a four-year, $11 million deal. He was scheduled to hit National Hockey League free agency.

Hagelin's signing comes just days after the Caps traded Matt Niskanen, and his $5.75 million cap hit to the Philadelphia in exchange for Radko Gudas, who after the Flyers retained 30% of his salary, has a cap hit of $2.345 million for the upcoming season. According to Pierre LeBrun, here are the financial details of the deal.

The Swedish winger has 93 goals and 241 points in 546 National Hockey League games. Hagelin finished the season with 19 points in 58 games. The lone negative could come in the length of the contract, as he'll turn 31 before the 2019-20 season starts.

With the potential departure of veteran blue liner Brooks Orpik, Hagelin could be counted on to take a bigger leadership role this fall in his first full season in Washington.

He's a strong defensive forward who primarily relies on his speed to wreak havoc on other teams.

With his contract, the Caps have about $10.735 million of cap space.

Acquired from the LA Kings in a February trade, Hagelin came in and turned around his offensive performance and notched three goals and 11 points through his 20 games in Washington.

Hagelin won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Penguins in 2016 and 2017. He also will be counted on to produce if winger Brett Connolly departs in free agency or the Capitals don't re-sign Andre Burakovsky. He has split his career between the New York Rangers, Anaheim Ducks, Penguins, Kings, and the Capitals. He has played in 128 playoff games, posting 48 points.
