The president was discussing Meghan in a recent interview with Britain's The Sun newspaper in the run-up to his state visit to the United Kingdom on Monday.

The US former actress has been a vocal critic of Trump.

Asked if he was sorry to miss out on meeting the American-born Meghan and told that she "wasn't so nice about you" during the campaign, Mr Trump says: "I didn't know that".

After sharing that he was looking forward to seeing both Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles, both of whom he's previously met, Trump was asked if he was "sorry" not to be seeing Markle, who is now on maternity leave, in light of some comments she had made about him back in 2016.

Amid a growing online outcry, President Donald Trump responded to claims he called Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, "nasty" by tweeting that it was "made up by the Fake News Media" on Sunday.

An official Twitter account for US President Donald Trump's 2020 reelection campaign, meant to promote pro-Trump messages and combat "fake news", was mocked by Twitter users as it pushed back at CNN on Saturday, claiming the outlet had misrepresented Trump's comments about Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex. In the interview, when asked about Meghan saying she would leave America, Mr Trump said: "A lot of people are moving here [to the US]". "She'll be very good".

In response, The Sun has now shared a recording of the interview, in which Trump is clearly heard calling the Duchess "nasty".

A debate over the president's comments ignited over the weekend.

But in Britain, Trump's remarks ahead of the trip also echoed concerns voiced in the lead-up to Meghan's wedding with Harry: that her past political activism may make things awkward for the royal family, which is not supposed to voice public political views. "I hope she does".

While Prince Harry is expected to meet the President, Ms Markle will not be present, as she is now on maternity leave with their son, Archie.

The Trumps will not be staying at Buckingham Palace, where state visitors usually lodge, because of renovations underway at the Queen's 775-room official residence.

Meghan isn't the only member of the Royal Family who's been the subject of one of Trump's sprays.
