Eberle re-signs with Islanders for 5 years

What Jordan Eberle’s extension says about the Islanders’ offseason plan and yet unsigned players

Forward Jordan Eberle agreed to a five-year contract that will keep him with the New York Islanders, the team announced on Friday.

The Islanders have kept their man, or at least one of them.

Andy Graziano: Eberle's deal is a nice surprise. "I liked it there, I enjoyed the community, the playoffs were great". In my mind, I like the direction the Islanders are going.... I love the way that we play.

For his part, the 29-year-old Eberle understood that his mediocre 2018-19 regular season might not get him invited back.

French Open 2019: Rafael Nadal Wins His 12th Title at Roland Garros
Thiem would have felt confident going into the final having beaten Nadal on clay on his way to the title in Barcelona in April. Speaking about his injuries, he said: "I lost, I think, around 15 or even more Grand Slams in my career for injuries.

Eberle was coming off a six-year, $36 million deal that he originally signed with the Edmonton Oilers before he was traded to NY in 2017. He'll have a modified/16 team no-trade clause for years three through five. The signing shows that the Islanders are a positive destination for players.

What the Islanders don't want to see with Eberle is the type of stark decline in year-over-year production like what's happened with Eriksson and Lucic in particular because front offices can see the hard position those contracts have put both Vancouver and Edmonton in.

The number still gives them some room to add even if they re-sign Anders Lee and Robin Lehner, but their salary cap space is lessening.
