During the course of his innings Gayle, who has previously indicated this will be his last World Cup, overtook Viv Richards as the leading scorer in one-day internationals between England and the West Indies. Gayle went on to set the career record for most runs in ODIs between West Indies and England before he was finally caught on the boundary for 36.

But by the time they came to bat the sun was out and tournament favourites England rarely looked troubled, with Root in particular timing the ball beautifully during his 100 not out.

England will be desperate for positive news from the treatment room but the pair were not missed on the day, a modest chase of 213 proving a walk in the park for Root, who opened for the first time in his global one-day career and made 100 not out in 94 deliveries.

"It´s obviously nice for this hundred to mean something and for us to win".

"You pride yourself on working it out as a batsman, building big partnerships either when setting or closing down a chase like we did today".

Root, only an occasional bowler, then struck again in his next over when West Indies captain Jason Holder (nine) could only pop the ball up for another caught and bowled immediately after a six over long-off. After Bairstow fell for 45, Root and Chris Woakes added 104 for the second wicket.

With the end in sight, Woakes was dismissed for 40, caught by substitute Fabian Allen off the bowling of Gabriel.

Frustrated West Indies captain Jason Holder said: "We didn´t put enough runs on the board". It was really important that we took advantage of that and we followed through when we got the opportunity to bat when it got a bit better. The two dropped outfield catches weren't too damaging for England.

President Trump Has Made a Decision on Kellyanne Conway
Trump said the recommendation is an attack on Conway's "right of free speech", adding that it is "not fair". The accompanying report goes on to cite examples of Conway ripping Trump's potential political opponents.

England saw skipper Morgan (back spasm) and in-form batsman Roy limp off during West Indies' innings but their re-jigged batting order encountered few alarms in a routine chase.

West Indies were 55-3 at that point - Woakes having yorked Evin Lewis (2) in the third over - only for Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer (39) to rebuild with a stand of 89 from 99 deliveries.

Joe Root picked up his first two wickets in one-day global cricket since January 2018, both caught-and-bowled, and Barbados-born paceman Jofra Archer (3-30) picked up his first wickets against West Indies.

"I'm a bit stiff and sore, I had a bit of a back spasm which hasn't settled down yet", Morgan told Test Match Special.

Andre Russell battered two sixes off leg spinner Adil Rashid in three balls, but then did not quite get hold of a Wood short ball and was caught by Woakes at deep midwicket.

Wood finished with figures of 3-18, while Archer took 3-30.

England's third victory in four matches lifts them to second in the standings behind the Black Caps.
