Police in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating how an abandoned foetus was found on board a FlySafair aircraft which was scheduled to travel from Durban to Johannesburg on Friday morning.

She explained that shortly before take-off the pilot came over the intercom to announce that a fetus had been found in the toilet cistern, and that the plane was now a "crime scene".

Airports Company South Africa spokesperson, Colin Naidoo says police are now on the scene.

Police confirmed the incident and said they were investigating as passengers were asked to disembark the plane and their journeys were re-scheduled.

FlySafair spokesperson Kirby Gordon says the foetus was found upon final inspection of the waste management system.

According to Gordon, all affected passengers had since been accommodated on other flights.

"FlySafair will do anything we can to assist them in their efforts".
