Gary Woodland wins 119th US Open

Rory McIlroy's wait for a first major title since 2014 goes on after a bad start ended his hopes on the final day of the US Open at Pebble Beach.

Brooks Koepka came extremely close to doing something that hadn't been done in more than 100 years today, as the two-time U.S. Open champion nearly made it three straight.

A three-time victor on the PGA Tour, Woodland began smartly picking, up two birdies on his outward nine and at one point increased his advantage to four strokes. Woodland invited her to play the par-3 16th, and Amy hit into a bunker, blasted onto the green and made the par putt, all the while saying, "You got this".

Koepka failed in his quest to become the first player since Willie Anderson in 1905 to win three straight U.S. Opens.

Thanks to the PGA Tour's condensed schedule this year, things really pick up after the British Open, with the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis immediately following it and then the three FedEx Cup playoff events to end August.

Before the 2019 U.S. Open, Woodland's best finish in the tournament was tied for 23rd and his best round was 66. If he elects to play the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis, Tennessee, the week following The Open, he is facing five tournaments in six weeks, including the three FedEx Cup playoff events.

McIlroy, who went into the Pebble Beach major after firing a final-round 61 to win last week's Canadian Open, now will focus his attention on his preparations for The Open Championship at Royal Portrush in his native Northern Ireland. The world number one was matched at [2.4] when he found the fairway on the short par five sixth but he made a mess of his second stroke and only made par, missed a seven-footer for birdie at seven and bogeyed eight.

When asked if he would play again before Portrush, Woods said, "I'll play at home, yeah". "And sometimes, no matter how good your "good" is, it isn't there", Koepka said. "I give it my all every time and sometimes it's not meant to be".

That birdie put him at 13-under 271 and earned him $2.25 million, the richest payoff in golf.

It was quite a ballgame, but it didn't go back and forth.

It was the first hole at the Lawrence Country Club, which is approximately a 365-yard par-4.

"Dealing with losing in this game is a huge thing because even the best, the greatest winners, win such a small percentage of the time", he said.

Something wonderful happened to Woodland. "To go out in style like that is pretty cool".

Woodland then made a birdie on the par-5 18th hole, giving him a round of 69 and a 3-shot victory over Koepka.

That advantage appeared to be in jeopardy when he pushed his tee shot on the par-3 17th hole to the far right side of the green, about 90 feet from the hole.

Others who finished near the top of the leaderboard included Justin Rose in a four-way tie for third, as well as Adam Scott and Louis Oosthuizen in a tie for seventh place.

Tiger Woods finished in a tie for 21st.
