"Reasons of the deaths will be clear after postmortem", said Ratan Lal Bhargava, Additional Superintendent of Police of Balotara.

Those killed have been identified as Sundar Devi, Nainu Devi, Narangi Devi, Keval Das, Pemaram, Sanwaldas, Ramesh Kumar, Devilal, Jabbar Singh, Champalal, Indra Singh, Jitendra, Avinash and Maal Singh.

The injured were taken to nearby government and private hospitals. "We have ordered an inquiry into the incident. The collapsing pandal damaged electricity wires, which electrocuted several listeners", Inspector General, Jodhpur Range, Sachin Mittal said.

Eyewitnesses claimed the tent got uprooted because of the wind and hovered in air for a few seconds before collapsing, PTI reported.

The "Ram Katha" was organised by the Mata Rani Bhatiyani Mandir Sansthan of Jasol, which had invited internationally acclaimed story-teller Muralidhar Maharaj to deliver his sermons. It started on Saturday and was about to continue till June 30.

Footage from inside the tent showed how in the minutes before the tent's collapse, the man leading the Ram Katha ceremony, Murlidhar Maharaj, realised the structure was no longer safe and called for its evacuation.
