Pelosi Slams US-Mexico Migration Deal as Undermining US'Preeminent Leadership Role

President Donald Trump opened up a whole thread of rage on Twitter Sunday in response to the devastating New York Times report, published Saturday, that Mexico's concessions were not a result of pressure from tariffs but rather months of preparation.

President Trump compared his record to that of former President Barack Obama while defending his new deal with Mexico to reduce illegal immigration, and in Trump's opinion, it's no contest.

Trump, in his tweets, lashed out at the New York Times for suggesting the deal was not entirely new and also pointed out that tariffs could be back on the table if the Mexican Government does not honour its end of the deal.

"Another false report in the Failing @nytimes", Trump wrote. "We have been trying to get some of these Border Actions for a long time, as have other administrations, but were not able to get them, or get them in full, until our signed agreement with Mexico", Trump tweeted.

US President Donald Trump announced that he had suspended plans to impose tariffs on Mexico, tweeting that the country "has agreed to take strong measures" to stem the flow of Central American migrants into the United States.

"Importantly, some things not mentioned in yesterday press release, one in particular, were agreed upon. That will be announced at the appropriate time", Trump said in another post.

"There is now going to be great cooperation between Mexico & the United States of America, something that didn't exist for decades", he said in another tweet.

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

And over the past week, negotiators failed to persuade Mexico to accept a "safe third country" treaty that would have given the United States the legal ability to reject asylum seekers if they had not sought refuge in Mexico first.

Mexico has also agreed to take "unprecedented steps to increase enforcement to curb irregular migration", including the deployment of the Mexican National Guard throughout the country, especially on its southern border with Guatemala. It was the highest monthly figure in 13 years. However, if for some unknown reason there is not, we can always go back to our previous, very profitable, position of Tariffs - But I don't believe that will be necessary'.

Lamy said it was understandable that Mexico had sought to extricate itself from the tariff bind, but noted it ran the risk of facing more threats in future. In May alone, authorities detained almost 23,000 migrants on their side of the border, triple the number in January and about twice the monthly average in the first five months of past year.

Trump and his Republican supporters hailed the deal as a major breakthrough, but the Democrats sharply criticized his frequent resort to tariff threats and said numerous Mexican concessions were made months ago. The Times disputed the credit he said he deserved, reporting that aspects of the agreement had already been agreed upon months before the president's tariff threat.

In his speech on Saturday, Lopez Obrador did not cite any new commitment to buy more American farm products. "The president put a charge in this whole dialogue with Mexico with the tariff threat, brought them to the table, the foreign minister from Mexico arrived within hours".

Key aspects of the agreement are still unclear, including whether Mexico has pledged to buy more USA agricultural products and if the deal materially expanded a previous commitment by Mexico to more vigorously police its southern border with Guatemala. In a statement, the ministry's Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) said it froze the accounts due to "probable links with human trafficking and illegal aid to migrant caravans".
