Brent crude futures barely moved at $60.01 in early trade after a 3.7 per cent slide on Wednesday to $59.97 a barrel, the worldwide benchmark's lowest close since January 28. Brent crude oil, the worldwide standard, jumped $1.18 to $61.15 per barrel.

US West Texas Intermediate crude futures firmed slightly to $51.29 per barrel, compared to the previous day's close of 50.72 a barrel, its weakest settlement since January 14.

"The knee-jerk reaction is more a response to the risks associated with higher tensions in the region and prospect of more attacks, than immediate impact on oil supplies", Craig Erlam of OANDA said in a market commentary.

European stock are expected to fall, with futures Britain's FTSE and Germany's DAX down about 0.2%. The CAC 40 in France was flat at 5,376.

The three biggest H-shares percentage decliners were Great Wall Motor Co Ltd, which has fallen 4.51%, SINOPHARM GROUP CO LTD, which has lost 2.9% and China Life Insurance Co Ltd, down by 2.8%. US shares were headed for a weak open as the future contract for the Dow Jones industrial average lost 0.2% to 26,017 while that for the S&P 500 also declined 0.2% to 2,882.

Chinese regulators should step up support for the economy and keep ample liquidity in the financial system, Vice Premier Liu He said on Thursday, suggesting Beijing would soon unveil more policies to bolster growth amid rising US trade pressure. He did not name any suspects or say how the vessels were attacked.

BSM Ship Management said one of the vessels, Kokuka Courageous, was carrying methanol and sustained "damage to the ship's hull starboard side". It said the vessel was "on fire and adrift".

In Hong Kong, stocks were still under pressure amid large-scale protests.

The protests threaten to shake confidence in the hub for many regional and global businesses and investors.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 101.94 points, or 0.39%, to 26,106.77, the S&P 500 gained 11.8 points, or 0.41%, to 2,891.64 and the Nasdaq Composite added 44.41 points, or 0.57%, to 7,837.13.

The Hang Seng index dropped as much as 1.8% before ending 0.1% lower at 27,294.71, while the China Enterprises Index ended 0.2% lower at 10,472.44, also recovering from earlier losses.

Japan's Nikkei shed 0.8 percent, while US Stock futures in Asia dipped 0.3 percent and the Bombay Stock exchange (BSE) had shrugged off 0.49 percent. Streets and sidewalks were generally clear of obstructions Thursday with a heavy police presence, but students and civil rights activists have pledged to keep protesting the legislation. Australia's S&P ASX 200 edged less than 0.1% lower to 6,543.70. Shares fell in Taiwan and throughout Southeast Asia.

The euro stood little changed at $1.1293, having taken a hit on Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump said he was considering sanctions over Russia's Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline project and warned Germany against being dependent on Russian Federation for energy.

The Japanese yen strengthened 0.16% versus the greenback, to 108.34 per dollar, while sterling was last trading at $1.2681, down 0.04% on the day.
