The Canadian government has yet to decide which single-use plastic products will be included on the list but it is expected to target plastic bags, straws, cutlery, plates, and stir sticks.

The federal government announced a plan to ban single-use plastics by the year 2021, but will apparently consult with the public and with businesses first about what items these will include before enacting the legislation. It's part of a larger strategy to tackle plastic pollution.

Environment Canada says that Canadians throw away more than 34 million plastic bags every day that often wind up in landfills, and it can take as long as 1,000 years for them to decay.
