Huawei confirms plans to launch its own Android alternative OS

It's a direct result of what Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's consumer division, said earlier this year was the backup OS the company has been prepping for just such a turn of events like this, apparently long ago envisioning a day when it would need to wean itself off a reliance on USA companies.

However, intelligence experts say they can only provide limited assurances that the Chinese company is not a risk to broadband and phone networks in the UK. If it is installed on Huawei devices, they will not be able to access many Android apps because Sailfish's compatibility layer is far from flawless, as the outlet reports.

There is speculation that Huawei may launch the HongMeng operating system later this year with the launch of a new Mate series smartphone, the business flagship for the fall shopping season.

The company also plans to use Hongmeng OS for tablets and PCs, as revealed in its trademark description that was approved by the Chinese National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) last month.

Alphabet Inc's Google has earlier said it would no longer provide Android software for Huawei phones after a 90-day reprieve granted by the US government expires in August.

Some major tech firms are said to be actively working with Huawei to push forward the release of HongMeng OS, which can deal a major blow to the US-led Huawei crackdown.

At home, Huawei applied for a Hongmeng trademark in August a year ago and received a nod last month, according to a filing on China's intellectual property administration's website.

As a reminder, following the ban on Huawei in the US, Huawei has just three months during which it will receive Android updates.

The company has denied its products pose a security threat.

Huawei, scrambling to solve its U.S. ban, may take a multi-pronged approach to its Android and Arm technology.

However, consumers spooked by how matters have escalated are offloading their devices amid Android worries.

Huawei delaying the Mate X makes a lot of sense, especially as the company seems unsure of the stability of the product.

Broadcom Inc has warned of a broad slowdown in chip demand, blaming the U.S. Some reports suggest that could be as soon as October this year. Huawei accounted for about or 4% of the company's overall sales past year.

The future of Huawei's smartphone ecosystem is uncertain following the blacklisting of the company by the United States government.
