Huawei is reportedly chasing Verizon for $1B in patent licensing fees

Ltd. had told Verizon Communication Inc. that the No. 1 U.S. wireless carrier should pay off licensing fee of more than 230 patents to the Chinese telco gear maker, while a person familiar with the subject matter had revealed on Wednesday, the 12th of June 2019, that, Huawei had been seeking more than $1 billion for these patents.

Representatives for Huawei and Verizon met last week in NY to discuss some of the patents at issue.

Neither Huawei nor Verizon immediately responded to requests for comment.

Verizon is reportedly using equipment through other companies that relies on Huawei patents covering core networking gear, internet of things technology and wireline infrastructure. Sprint Corp declined to comment.

"These issues are larger than just Verizon", a Verizon spokesman told Reuters.

Huawei continues to face a world of hurt in the United States. Huawei has maintained that it's a pawn in the trade negotiations, and that it doesn't provide technology secrets to the Chinese government via backdoors in its products and applications.

The battle with Huawei and the USA has been brewing for some time, but it started to heat up a year ago as the Trump administration's trade negotiations with China soured. U.S. intelligence agencies have previously accused the company of putting "backdoor' access tools into its devices, enabling the Chinese government to spy on users". Huawei has denied that it would help China spy.

The news report says that the company released an ex parte memo today outlining its position against the Federal Communications Commissions national-security-related ban of its equipment.

Huawei and USA wireless carriers T-Mobile US Inc and AT&T Inc did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

The ban isn't hurting Huawei alone, however.

Huawei has been battling the USA government for more than a year.

Huawei, which is now the second biggest smartphone vendor globally after Samsung, uses a customised version of Android on all its smartphones and tablets.
