India home to worlds second largest internet user base, thanks to Jio

The general partner at venture capital firm Bond Capital ran through a 333-page rapid-fire 30-minute slideshow Tuesday morning in Arizona.

Meeker had published her first Internet trends report back in 1995 while she was at Morgan Stanley.

"Queen of the internet" has delivered her much anticipated annual internet trends report, which highlights the most essential statistics and technology trends on the internet.

In 2018, more than half of the world's population was online. As of the first quarter of this year, the coverage of the PaaS platform and the LaaS platform were 37 and 49 percent, respectively, and this figure was 27 and 39 percent respectively last year.

According to Dentsu Aegis Network's (DAN), Digital Report 2019, the Indian digital advertising market size is pegged at INR 10,819 Cr ($1.3 Bn) as of 2018 and the estimated CAGR growth will be 31.96% to reach INR 24,920 Cr ($3.52 Bn) in 2021. According to the report, there are now 3.8 billion global internet users, up 6% year-over-year. Ahead, we break down the most important takeaways for marketers. Out of these, four of the top six are based in the U.S. while two are Chinese companies.

Brands leading the internet market capitalization include Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple.

E-commerce is now 15% of retail sales. Most of the spending is still on Google and Facebook, but companies such as Amazon and Twitter are getting a growing share.

Striking themes that called high attention this year included encrypted messaging apps, the rise of freemium subscription business models, interactive gaming, telemedicine and accelerating digital ad spend.

The Drum has pulled together key advertising and marketing trends from the report.

"There are areas where customer acquisition costs are rising to unsustainable levels", the report notes. Meeker suggested cheaper ways to acquire customers, like free trials and unpaid tiers.

US submits extradition request for Assange
The Wikileaks founder is facing 18 charges in the United States of receiving and publishing classified information. That is because the U.S. -U.K. treaty prohibits extradition for the specific charges Assange faces.

Her internet trends report is seen as an investment Bible in the internet industry.

According to the report, a Pew Research study of United States teens found that 42% experience offensive name calling, 32% experienced spreading of false rumors and 16% experienced physical threats.

Furthermore, the report noted 4% decline in the global new smartphone unit shipments past year.

The amount of time spent on phones has also surpassed the amount of time spent watching TV.

What are people doing on the Internet?

Reliance Jio, a privately owned mobile carrier in India, has 307 million customers and recorded annual data usage of almost 17 exabytes (EB) previous year. 47 million people use Amazon Echo smart speakers, another number that has nearly doubled.

People are increasingly using images to communicate online, thanks to faster Internet access and better smartphone cameras. More than 50 percent of tweets on Twitter now use images, video, or other media.

As the Internet continues to grow, it's having its share of problems as well.

While ad spend is growing, global internet ad revenue among six major platforms is decelerating. Meeker's report says companies will need to find new strategies to amplify good content while burying inappropriate content.
