Iran Makes Show of Drone Wreckage After Trump Calls Off Retaliatory Strike

Trump was right not to bomb Iran. Now he needs a strategy.

On Friday morning President Trump tweeted that while he had almost executed a retaliatory strike against Iran, he ultimately chose to call it off because it would have resulted in 150 deaths which would not have been a proportional response to the Iranian attack against an unmanned aircraft.

Trump said Friday the United States was "cocked & loaded" to strike Iran but pulled back at the last minute because it would not have been a "proportionate" response to Tehran shooting down an American drone.

Under pressure to respond to the high-stakes incident near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, Trump said the USA was "cocked & loaded to retaliate" on Thursday night by hitting "3 different sites", but scrapped the strikes just 10 minutes before they were carried out.

After weeks of rising tension amid a spate of attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf, Iran said on Thursday it had shot down an unmanned US military surveillance drone, fanning fears of an overt military confrontation between the longtime adversaries.

"The explanation - as you said - just doesn't make sense", Smith said. "I am in no hurry, our Military is rebuilt, new, and ready to go, by far the best in the world", Trump said. "You can argue if you don't want to strike, don't strike".

Iran's UN ambassador Majid Takht Ravanchi said in a letter to the UN secretary-general that the drone had entered Iranian airspace despite "repeated radio warnings" and was shot down by Iran under the UN Charter that allows self-defence action "if an armed attack occurs". "And I didn't like it, I didn't think, I didn't think it was proportionate". Elizabeth Warren tweeted late Thursday night, upon news that Mr. Trump had ordered the strike but pulled back.

"The re-routings have minimally affected the arrival/departure timings of some flights", the spokeswoman said, without naming specific countries or provinces that are being avoided.

In what may have been an effort to show the multiple-target capabilities of Iran's air defenses, Hajizadeh, the IRGC aeroforce commander, said his systems could have shot down a U.S.

A source had confirmed to Fox News earlier Friday morning that the administration made a last-minute decision to call off the retaliatory strikes against Iran.

"We dispatched assets to recover debris". Around this same time, Bolton began to inform the administration of alleged Iranian threats against USA interests in the region.

He did not respond directly to Iranian charges that the US was warned several times prior to the missile launch by the IRGC that the Global Hawk and the P-8 Poseidon were in violation of Iranian airspace.

"Yes, the USA routinely flies missions in the area, and does so in a manner consistent with worldwide law", he said.
