"Iran will firmly confront any aggression or threat by America", foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi told Tasnim.

Tehran said the unarmed Global Hawk surveillance drone was on a spy mission over its territory, but Washington said it was shot down over worldwide airspace. The United States claims it was flying over global waters, while Iran claims the drone had entered its airspace.

President Donald Trump has said that the act of taking out of the U.S. drone was a "terrible mistake" by Iran.

Iran's letter further warned, "While the Islamic Republic of Iran does not seek war, it reserves its inherent right, under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, to take all appropriate necessary measures against any hostile act violating its territory, and is determined to vigorously defend its land, sea and air".

Meanwhile, Iran called on the worldwide community "to demand the United States to put an end to its continued unlawful and destabilizing measures in the already volatile region of the Persian Gulf".

This came in press statement by commander of Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, to official Iranian TV, according to the Associated Press.

Though most of the oil that flows through the Strait comes to Asia Pacific, Europe and North America, the oil market is globally integrated and a disruption anywhere can contribute to higher oil prices everywhere.

The United States said Monday it was sending about 1,000 additional troops to the Middle East.

Monetary policymakers the world over are taking note of the latest spike in crude oil prices.

Britain's Middle East minister travels to Tehran Sunday for talks with Iranian officials.

He also said Iran itself had shown restraint, opting not take shoot down another US plane, sparing American lives. It earlier sent an aircraft carrier group and B-52 strategic bombers to the region.

James Phillips, a senior researcher at the conservative Washington-based Heritage Foundation, said he believes the immediate risk of a U.S. -Iran conflict has passed.

"The Europeans will not be given more time beyond July 8 to save the deal", Mousavi said, referring to Iran's deadline of 60 days that Tehran announced in May.

Washington also has accused Iran of responsibility for carrying out attacks on tankers in the congested shipping lanes heading out of the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz.

Jalal Hajizavar had left his post nine years ago and was convicted by a military court after an investigation which discovered documents and spying equipment at his home, the report said.
