Francesco Galdelli after he was arrested on the outskirts of Pattaya. An Italian who masqueraded as Hollywood superstar George Clooney to sell clothes online

An Italian man by the name of Francesco Galdelli and his wife Vanja Goffi were arrested in Thailand Sunday after Galdelli claimed to be George Clooney and sold clothes online, claiming it was a business opened by the actor.

Thailand's Crime Suppression Division said in a statement that Francesco Galdeli, 58, was arrested Saturday near the city of Pattaya on suspicion of staying in the country illegally.

The couple is also wanted in Italy for multiple scams including selling fake Rolex watches online, the statement said.

The case against the pair stretches back several years after Clooney told a Milan court that the pair-and another accomplice-had fraudulently used his name to promote a fashion range.

They had fled their home country to avoid arrest and had been dubbed the Italian Bonnie and Clyde after the legendary USA gangster couple. The Oscar-winner said he never OK'd any affiliation with the bogus brand "GC Exclusive by George Clooney".

The CSD chief said the two were able to dupe investors out of more than 40 million baht. They were sentenced to eight years and four months in jail on fraud charges but fled.

The two have been wanted by Interpol since 2013.

They will be charged with overstaying their visas in Thailand before extradition proceedings begin.

Italy's worldwide police and the Crime Suppression Division of the Royal Thai Police finally succeeded in arresting the two on Sunday, after tailing them.
