Lexus GX 460 gains new safety tech, off-road package

2020 Lexus GX 460 three-row SUV adds bolder grille and more off-road tech

2020 Lexus GX 460 three-row SUV adds bolder grille and more off-road tech

The Lexus GX is getting a very minor facelift for 2020, consisting mainly of a redesigned spindle grille. Under the hood is a 4.6-liter V8 putting out 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, capable of towing 6,500 pounds.

At the top of the list is a new off-road package, available on the SUV's Luxury grade. It adds a 360-degree camera that can also show the view from underneath the auto, a transmission cooler, a fuel-tank protector, and what Lexus calls Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select. Crawl Control has five different settings to modulate the car's throttle and brakes at low speeds, improving traction over rough terrain, while Multi-Terrain Select is basically a fancy grouping of off-road driving modes.

The current generation of the Lexus GX was introduced in late 2009. Multi-Terrain Select gives a variety of modes to deal with different surface types. Craw Control, on the other hand, is designed for low-speed off-roading experiences by automatically maintaining a steady pace while the SUV's gearbox is in low range.

Orlando Sentinel's 2020 Endorsement: Definitely Not Trump
Protesters and supporters of President Donald Trump , who will officially announce his 2020 re-elcection bid Tuesday night in Orlando, interacted prior to the rally.

The most notable upgrade for the 2020 GX 460 has to be its safety systems. A Torsen limited-slip centre differential distributes power 40:60 front to rear under most driving conditions and changes the ratio as needed based on wheel slip. In addition to Crawl Control, there's Downhill Assist Control (DAC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC). Perhaps more relevant, then, is the updated interior, with options like a wood and leather heated steering wheel, semi-aniline leather, and - on the Premium and Luxury grades - Gray Sapele wood with aluminum trim. The LED headlights have a new look, too.

Toyota's luxury auto brand will be offering customers of the revised GX an optional Sport Design Package. Lexus Safety System+ is now standard, adding a suite of driver-assist systems to the fold, including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high beams and adaptive cruise control.
