Lionsgate Nabs Hunger Games Prequel for the Big Screen

Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins announced on Monday that she's working on a new book set during the "Dark Days", 64 years before Katniss volunteered as tribute. Based on the genre, it seems probably we could be getting more books, and therefore more movies, following this one, though I suppose we'll just have to wait and see. "We've been communicating with her during the writing process and we look forward to continuing to work closely with her on the movie".

The first Hunger Games movie hit theaters in 2012 and set box office records for opening day and the biggest opening weekend for a non-sequel film, taking many in Hollywood by surprise. But because the series made almost $3 billion at the box office, placing it in the top-20 of highest-grossing cinematic franchises ever, a prequel movie is already under consideration.

Collins' best-selling dystopian trilogy of "The Hunger Games", "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay" was published by Scholastic starting in 2008 and later developed into four films starring Jennifer Lawrence.

'Game Of Thrones' Star Lena Headey Wishes Cersei Had A 'Better Death'
In a new interview with The Guardian , Headey admits that she had some issues with how showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss handled the drama's denouement, but it would take more than a few drinks to get it out of her.

Other studios tried to replicate the Hunger Games franchise's success, including Lionsgate's sister studio Summit with the Divergent series, but none hit the same heights and few could even call themselves modest hits. The Hunger Games was a truly unique phenomenon.

Set 64 years prior to the events of the first Hunger Games novel, which saw a young girl, Katniss Everdeen (later portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence across four blockbuster film adaptations), fighting to topple an oppressive government that forced youths to fight to the death in a traditional nationwide contest, the now untitled prequel is set to chronicle the events surrounding the 10th Hunger Games.

In 2017, a Hunger Games theme park attraction opened in Dubai, with attractions including a Capitol bullet train roller coaster, the hall of heroes, and the Panem aerial tour multimedia experience.
