The Latest: Logano edges Kurt Busch, Truex in overtime

Monday's race at Michigan International Speedway provided the latest layer of the Joey Logano-Martin Truex Jr. rivalry.

The Team Penske driver earned his second victory of the 36-race 2019 season in the season's 15th race, the FireKeepers Casino 400, at Michigan International Speedway following an overtime restart with two laps to go, a restart that the Joe Gibbs Racing driver claimed Logano jumped.

"I did it when I got there (to the restart zone)", Logano said.

"You don't have days like that, that are so close to flawless". The best auto, the best team. We executed perfectly all the way through. "Ultimately able to bring the Shell Pennzoil Ford into Victory Lane".

It was the third win in a row for Ford at MIS. Kurt Busch finished second Monday, followed by Truex, Daniel Suarez and Kyle Busch.

Added Kurt Busch: "Logano knew he had to go early because that was his best chance to get ahead of (Truex), and that changed the complexion of the race". "I had a blast". Austin Dillon won that stage. It took a little more than 10 laps, but when the cycle was complete with 15 laps left Logano was back in front by almost a second over Martin Truex Jr. and Kurt Busch.

Brad Keselowski, Harvick, Ryan Newman, Ryan Blaney and Alex Bowman completed the top 10.

Both Keselowski and Harvick had to battle back from a lap down in the race.

"He clearly went before the box", Truex said.

"We just didn't put it all together today", Keselowski said. We were going to need one heck of a push from behind - a shove down the straightaway. It is kind of a miracle that we got back up to sixth to be quite honest.

Joey Logano winning a race and Martin Truex Jr. having something to say about it afterward has become an ongoing theme in the NASCAR Cup Series ever since Logano won the "battle" at Martinsville Speedway in late October past year before going on to win the "war" at Homestead-Miami Speedway a few weeks later. But when it came down to the final laps Monday in the race delayed a day because of rain, Logano took the checkered flag for his second win of 2019. Team Penske had all three cars finish in the top-10 for the second time... This was the 100th race at MI for NASCAR's top series.

Clint Bowyer and Kevin Harvick, who won the two MIS races past year, remained winless this season. Erik Jones had a rough day beginning with cutting down a tire on Lap 142, he would go on to spin to cause the last caution and finished 31st.

Kevin Harvick, who seemed to be the only driver throughout Monday's race who could keep up with Logano, ended up seventh after taking four tires during the final pit stop cycle while most others took two. "Or maybe the rules are that you can just do whatever you want on restarts now". Many drivers made note of the difficulty of being able to pass the leader. "This is a big win for us".

Kurt Busch and Martin Truex Jr setup a final lap charge but came up just short of the win.
