Luis Enrique has stepped down from his position as Spain head coach, with his assistant Robert Moreno taking over on a permanent basis.

A statement given on behalf of Enrique was read at the news conference: "Due to the reasons that prevented me from carrying on my duties as coach since March and because they continue, I've made a decision to step down".

The RFEF had expressed last month their "total commitment" to Enrique and hoped to have him for "many years in charge".

It has been a decision of Luis himself that we deeply respect, and we appreciate that everyone be respectful of his privacy.

Federation president Luis Rubiales said Luis Enrique was experiencing a "very hard moment" and asked for the media to respect the coach's privacy.

Moreno has never been a first-team coach.

"I think I have experience", Moreno said. I have been a sponge and absorbed all I can. "I completely believe we will do a good job".

Bucks' Middleton to decline $13M option
According to a report from ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski , Middleton is expected to command a five-year contract with the Bucks. Middleton declined his option on Wednesday, but that doesn't necessarily portend a departure from Milwaukee.

This will be his first managerial job, having acted as assistant to Luis Enrique for the last nine years. They won all three.

Moreno presided over the most recent three of those wins, a 2-0 success in Malta in March followed by victories over the Faroe Islands and Sweden earlier this month.

MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 27: Head coach Luis Enrique of FC Barcelona looks on during the Copa Del Rey Final between FC Barcelona and Deportivo Alaves at Vicente Calderon stadium on May 27, 2017 in Madrid, Spain.

Moreno had been a part of Enrique's coaching staff at Roma, Celta Vigo, and Barcelona. The new boss of La Roja said he is grateful for the federation's confidence in him, but also recognised that it was not an easy day. I take this assignment with great responsibility.

"But we hired Luis Enrique with his team and his team is working very well".

It has been a topsy-turvy year for Spain's coaches.

Enrique became Spain's coach last July after the team's exit from the 2018 World Cup hosted by Russian Federation. The team then flopped under caretaker coach Fernando Hierro.
