The Major League Baseball Umpires Association slammed the one-game suspension handed down to Manny Machado on Tuesday after the San Diego slugger's angry reaction to a strike-out call.

Machado intends to appeal the suspension because he believes he didn't touch Welke during his tirade.

"Manny Machado was suspended one game for contact to an umpire during an argument over balls and strikes, while violently throwing his bat against the backstop, with absolutely no regard to anyone's safety", the body wrote.

The MLBUA expanded on its sentiments in a Facebook post, calling the suspension "a slap in the face of all umpires and a disgrace to the game itself". To quote MLB, Machado was suspended for "aggressively arguing and making contact" with home-plate umpire Bill Welke following a borderline strike call on a 2-2 pitch from Colorado Rockies starter German Marquez.

Congress, UPA Allies To Support Om Birla's Nomination As Lok Sabha Speaker
Birla was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha from Kota where he defeated Congress' Ramnarain Meena by over 2.5 lakh votes. Birla, a Masters in Commerce, has earlier been a member of the Rajasthan Assembly thrice from 2003.

The tweet was accompanied by the hashtags #Disappointed #LeadByExample #NotAppreciated #Violence #TemperTantrum #Inaction #NotTolerated #MakeanExampleof #OneGameSuspension #RepeatOffender and #Nonsense. Machado can continue to play until there's a final ruling; the Padres play Milwaukee on Monday night. They also said the comparison to "workplace violence" was inappropriate. "The video says it all. I think we've got a good case", Machado said. "I think that's a little too much, a little unjustified, but there's a process to this and we're going to go through it".

"Honestly, you know, I'm just waiting for my appeal, waiting for Major League Baseball and Joe Torre to get back to me, honestly just waiting for my hearing to plead my case and that's all we're going to worry about", Machado said before Tuesday night's game against Milwaukee.

Machado is still waiting for a decision on the suspension.

Padres Manager Andy Green noted Monday that Machado hadn't been ejected from a game since 2016. "This is not who he is consistently".
