The Toronto Maple Leafs have investigated a P.K. Subban deal

The salary cap ceiling, which should be announced this weekend following consultations between the NHL and the league's players' association, is expected to fall between $81 million and $83 million in 2019-20. "It was my honor to play with the iconic Maple Leag on my jersey, and to be a part of Leaf nation".

The Leafs also sent Carolina a conditional first-round pick and a seventh-round pick in the 2020 National Hockey League draft and received a 2020 sixth-round pick from the Hurricanes.

The Leafs don't retain any salary in the deal, so Marleau's $6.25-million USA cap hit for 2019-20 is off the books.

Marleau will be missed off the ice more than anything else, considering his quiet leadership and close friendships with Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews.

"Never forget how good you guys are. There's a lot of different things that go into those decisions both for him and the team, but I'm hopeful and I think he wants to be back, so that gives me optimism". He signed a three-year, $18.75-million contract with the Leafs in the summer of 2017 after 19 seasons with the San Jose Sharks.

Toronto had signed Marleau to a three-year contract worth $18.75-million United States in July 2017.

"The 6'2", 218-pound forward spent the last two seasons with the Maple Leafs after playing 19 seasons with the Sharks, and posted 37 points (16g, 21a) in 82 games with Toronto in 2018-19.

That day, two summers ago, when Patrick Marleau - the indestructible ironman with the soft heart, the presumed San Jose lifer - was pried away from California with the promise of millions, that elusive Cup shot, and the chance to mentor two of the most exhilarating young stars in the game, everyone with their Grade 10 math credit circled his third year under contract with the Maple Leafs as the tricky one.

Kapanen is technically in his fourth season with the Leafs, even though this was his first full season, and also his first in a prominent role with the team.
