He would, however, be welcomed by the fans who would show him more patience than they did Sarri despite him taking them to third in the Premier League and winning the Europa League.

Three of them - Chelsea loanees Fikayo Tomori, Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham - were involved in the playoff final at Wembley and could all be back at Stamford Bridge next season.

Maurizio Sarri is set to leave Chelsea and take over at Juventus after the Italian champions agreed to pay around £5 million in compensation, sources have told ESPN FC.

Chelsea's basic requirement of all their head coaches - to qualify for the Champions League - is unlikely to be tempered.

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag has his admirers in the Blues' boardroom but sources in Holland believe he will spend another year in Amsterdam, while former Juventus boss Max Allegri ruled himself out.

However, Sarri failed to transport that free-flowing football to Chelsea, despite making midfield playmaker Jorginho his first signing.

After a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal in January, Sarri labelled his players "very hard to motivate".

But Sarri endured consistent criticism from a significant portion of the club's supporters throughout the campaign and suffered heavy 4-0 and 6-0 defeats at Bournemouth and Manchester City.

The players soon started rebelling too.

Chelsea also reached the Carabao Cup final, but lost to Manchester City in a match overshadowed by goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refusing to be substituted before the penalty shoot-out.

On the agenda are smaller issues, such as Sarri's salary for this month.

The goal-scoring midfielder would be well placed to work with Chelsea's crop of talented youngsters then, who would likely be handed extra first-team chances should that transfer ban be enforced. Their star player Eden Hazard has since joined Real Madrid for a fee that could exceed £150 million.

Derby County are braced for a formal approach from Chelsea to speak with Frank Lampard following Maurizio Sarri's departure for Juventus.
